National Children’s Dental Health Month

Avoid The Plaque Attack!

children dental health month

Did you know that more than one in four children in the United States has had at least one cavity by the age of four. Many kids get cavities can even get cavities as early as the age of two! It is statistics like these that motivate the American Dental Association or the ADA to recognize February as National Children’s Dental Health Month. The ADA’s goal is to raise as much awareness as possible about developing excellent oral health. Manley Orthodonticsshares in this goal to raise awareness about the importance of oral health from regular brushing and flossing to the beauty of orthodontics.

“Defeat Monster Mouth”

The ADA encourages educators, dental professionals and healthcare givers to promote the notion of healthy oral habits to children, patients and many others. Each year is a different campaign with this year being “Defeat Monster Mouth”, encouraging children to defeat plaque and cavities by brushing twice a day every single day.

How Can You Help Your Child?

Every parent wants their child to be healthy and sometimes oral health can be overlooked. At the very least we encourage parents to make sure that their child is brushing and flossing twice a day in the morning and at night. Another way to ensure a healthier mouth is by eliminating foods and drinks that are high in sugar such as sodas and candies. If your child is apprehensive about brushing and flossing you can always encourage them with a rewards system. Each time your child brushes and flosses their teeth, they could earn a gold star and once they gain a grand total of your choosing they could earn a small prize. Eventually the child will begin to make brushing and flossing regularly a part of their everyday routine without reward!
