Treatment Through Orthognathic Surgery

corrective jaw treatment issaquah sammamish waWhat Is Corrective Jaw Surgery?
“Orthognathic” simply means “straight jaws,” and when jaws don’t align all kinds of symptoms or abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and teeth can occur. These abnormalities can interfere with your ability to chew, talk, and enjoy everyday activities, as well as lead to sleep apnea, snoring, and TMJ pain. Our Issaquah, WA, orthodontist for corrective jaw treatment can help correct these concerns in conjunction with orthodontic treatment, which may also improve the appearance of your overall facial profile.

Getting Help With Orthodontic Treatment
During your initial smile assessment, Dr. Manley will determine if orthognathic surgery is the correct treatment option for you. Should you opt for corrective jaw surgery, Dr. Manley will educate you on the overall function and benefit of your surgery. Christian Manley Orthodontics uses the most advanced technology and computerized treatment planning to minimize your treatment times, recovery periods, and the overall efficacy of your surgery. In fact, in some cases, jaw surgery may not even be necessary with the use of orthodontic care and treatment, thanks to the latest technologies in orthodontics.

Dr. Manley prides himself on working to transform the smiles and lives of his patients. Christian Manley Orthodontics employs the latest orthodontic technology available to help treat your condition so jaw surgery is the last possible option. Benefits of Orthodontic Appliances

Palate Expander for Children

If your child has a crossbite, crowding, or even impacted teeth, a palatal expander may be put in place while he or she is still growing. This appliance is used to broaden the upper jaw so that the upper teeth fit properly together out and over the lower teeth. The palate expander is cemented in place on the upper teeth – usually the molars – and you and/or your child are taught how to advance the screw of the expander daily, which is done slowly to minimize discomfort. Once your child’s palate is expanded to the correct width per Dr. Manley, your child will be instructed to stop turning the screw. The appliance remains in place until the soft cartilage in the palate fills in. From start to finish, this entire process typically takes only 4 – 6 months.

When the appliance is taken out, it is replaced with a removable retainer to maintain the expansion until most of the permanent teeth erupt. Palatal expanders will not prevent the need for braces when all the permanent teeth erupt. However, oftentimes it will eliminate the need for extraction of permanent teeth to create space or invasive jaw surgery to correct the growth discrepancy after the jaws fully develop.

Herbst Appliance: To Improve Lower Jaw Function

We all know braces and orthodontics can help build your child’s self-confidence, but the improved function of the jaw should also be considered. If you notice that your child has an overbite that traditional treatment can’t correct, Dr. Manley may recommend the Herbst appliance. The Herbst appliance is used in tandem with braces to shift the lower jaw into the perfect alignment. Without proper treatment, having an improper bite may threaten the overall health of your child’s teeth, gums, and jaw function.

Here’s how it works. The Herbst appliance uses a metal tube, which is attached to your child’s molars to connect the lower and upper jaw. Routine adjustments allow Dr. Manley to control the position of the jaw, as it relates to the upper teeth. The Herbst appliance treatment time is 12 months, on average. If you want to learn more about the Herbst appliance, one of our Christian Manley Orthodontics team members would be happy to discuss it further with you.

Invisalign Mandibular Advancement: The Antidote to Bulky Appliances

Traditional appliances to correct jaw positioning can be bulky and uncomfortable. Invisalign aligners with mandibular advancement feature can straighten your teeth and move your jaw forward at the same time. And their precision wings offer a comfortable, patient-friendly alternative to those bulky appliances. The precision wings on the Invisalign aligners will slowly push the lower jaw forward to grow into the right position, not only improving the bite but also enhancing the appearance of your profile.
